I have collected data from my video game habits from all the way back to 2014. Unfortunately, I relied on the console to keep track for me. Therefor between 2016 and 2018 there is little to no data due to my XBox 360 (which I played a lot during that time) not tracking how long I spent. Despite that, all my Nintendo consoles did, so I have the data for those. In the 2020s I began manually tracking my playtimes with a stopwatch and it became much more accurate after that.
The graph on the left shows how many hours I spent gaming in a year. In 2019 I got a Wii U and a Nintendo Switch and really got back into gaming. COVID also gave me a lot more free time to spend gaming instead of having to work on school work and other things. 2021-2024 were my high school years and those equated to less time gaming. In 2025 you can see that I started to play more games, which equated to both me wanting to play more games and me getting a better computer that could play the games I wanted to play.
The graph on the right shows which consoles had the most amount of playtime over the course of the years I have data for. You can see that the DS, 3DS, and Wii U all plateud right after 2020, but the Switch was pretty steady with its increases as time went on. There was a spike in the Switch around 2023 when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom released and I spent around 60 hours in one month playing it. Computer games are interesting as they have started to rise a lot more sharply in recent years unlike other consoles which have been decreasing in time spent playing.
